As Mother’s Day approaches, our hearts naturally turn toward the strength and resilience that defines motherhood. In Kansas City, providing rare disease family support is at the heart of our partnership with the Dax Blattner Foundation. By offering specialized pet care, we help “lighten the load” for parents navigating a difficult medical journey, allowing them to focus on what matters most—their child.
In the finest neighborhoods of Kansas City—from the quiet streets of Leawood to the vibrant communities in Olathe and Overland Park—we see “Pet Parents” who view their fur-babies as cherished family members. But for some, the role of “parent” carries an unimaginable weight. I recently sat down with Danielle Blattner, the powerhouse behind the foundation, to discuss how professional pet care serves as a vital pillar of support in her mission.

The Origin of the Mission: Lightening the Load
Q: The Dax Blattner Foundation was born out of your own journey with Dax and the desire to ensure no parent walks the path of a rare disease diagnosis alone. How does providing practical support, like home preparation and pet care, help empower parents to be the best advocates for their children?
Danielle: “Providing practical support allows parents to shift their focus back to what matters most—their child. When families are navigating a rare disease diagnosis, the emotional and logistical weight can be overwhelming. By helping with things like home preparation or pet care, we’re able to lighten the load in meaningful, practical ways.
The relief of knowing your pet is taken care of creates space—for parents to rest, process, ask questions, and show up more fully in medical settings. Advocacy requires energy, clarity, and presence, and when basic needs are supported, parents are better equipped to make informed decisions and confidently speak for their child.”
Stability in the Storm: Why Professional Care?
Q: When navigating the transition from the NICU to home, or facing long hospital stays, many things can feel out of control. What made you think of including a professional pet care provider in your resource network, and why did you feel Just Fur-Babies was the right partner for these families?
Danielle: “When so much feels uncertain, we wanted to focus on the areas where we could bring a sense of stability and relief. For many families, pets are part of the family—they offer comfort, normalcy, and emotional support. But during long hospital stays or the transition home from the NICU, caring for them can become one more thing to manage.
In our own journey, we were incredibly fortunate to have a reliable neighbor who stepped in to care for our dog, Ozzie. Knowing he was safe and cared for gave us one less thing to carry during an already overwhelming time—and that kind of peace is something every family deserves.
Just Fur-Babies stood out to us because of their compassion, reliability, and genuine understanding of what families are going through. We wanted a partner who would care for these pets with the same level of attention and heart that families give their children—and they do exactly that.”
The Symbolism of the Dragonfly and the Bond of a “Fur-Baby”
Q: The dragonfly in your logo symbolizes strength, happiness, and living life to the fullest despite hardship. In what ways have you seen the bond between a family and their ‘fur-babies’ contribute to that sense of peace and resilience during their most difficult moments?
Danielle: “The dragonfly in our logo is our way of honoring Dax. Dax was born with a rare genetic disorder: Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 8. The neurological findings in his MRI showed a ‘dragonfly-like’ cerebellum. Much like Dax, dragonflies symbolize self-realization, understanding the deeper meaning of life, taking the time to reconnect with our strength and happiness, and living life to the fullest.
And Ozzie wasn’t just our dog—he was our steady companion, our comic relief, and our quiet protector through both the hardest and happiest moments. He brought lightness to heavy days and a sense of calm when we needed it most. Even something as simple as knowing your pet is safe and cared for can bring a deep sense of peace.
We learned from Dax that the measure of life is not in years but in the love we give and receive. Through our foundation, we honor Dax’s legacy by helping others live with intention, love, and gratitude.”

Reducing the Mental Load through Fear Free® Excellence
Q: You often speak about the ‘fragmented medical system’ and the exhaustion parents face. How does knowing their pets are being cared for by Fear Free® certified professionals alleviate some of that ‘mental load’ for the families you serve?
Danielle: “When families are navigating a fragmented medical system, the mental load can be overwhelming. There are appointments, decisions, and information to process. Advocating for their child can feel like a full-time job in itself.
Knowing their pets are being cared for by Fear Free® certified professionals helps remove one more thing from that mental checklist. It gives families peace of mind that their pets are safe, comfortable, and cared for, allowing them to stay focused where they’re needed most. It didn’t change the hard days, but it made them more manageable.”
Community Action: How Kansas City Can Help
Q: Your foundation is doing incredible work to bridge the gap for families in the Kansas City area. Beyond spreading awareness of your mission, what can the Kansas City community do to support the Dax Blattner Foundation and the families you walk alongside?
Danielle: “We love our Kansas City community. Awareness is important, but action—small or large—truly makes the difference. That action can look like partnering with us as local businesses, offering services that ease the daily load for families, donating care package items, or helping expand the network of support.
No family should feel like they have to carry every piece of this journey by themselves. When the Kansas City community comes together—businesses, providers, friends, and neighbors—we create a safety net that allows families to focus on what matters most: their child.”
Honoring the “Bison Mothers” This Mother’s Day
This May, we honor the “Bison Mothers” who charge into the storm every day, putting their children first despite the wind and rain. We are deeply humbled to be the “Aunties and Uncles” who step in to ensure their fur-babies are safe, loved, and waiting with a soft purr when the family finally returns home.
No mother should have to walk this path alone. If you are looking for ways to support the mission and the families we walk alongside, here is how you can help today:
